Celebrating Freedom: Jackson College hosts Juneteenth Luncheon

June 4, 2024

Commemorate Juneteenth as Jackson College hosts a luncheon on Tuesday, June 11 on Central Campus, a part of Jackson’s local Juneteenth festivities.

College students, employees and community members are invited to this luncheon, to be held in Bert Walker Hall’s Community Rooms 144-145 from 12-1:30 p.m. This is an opportunity to listen, learn and be inspired by the perspectives shared. By fostering open dialogue and embracing our diversity, we can continue to heal, grow and build a more equitable society.

Jackson Mayor Daniel Mahoney will give an official welcome to all guests, and local playwright Lisa Williams will offer a speech to celebrate the occasion. Guests may enjoy a Motown Tribute, along with food from Tasty Spoons, Ashley Cakes and Texas Roadhouse.

This marks the 20th year for a Juneteenth celebration in Jackson:

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of freedom for African-Americans. It commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas and originated in Galveston in 1865. The observance of Juneteenth as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes achievement.
