GROUNDBREAKING SET FOR 5 P.M. FEB. 17

In response to the rising demand for skilled professionals in sectors such as utilities, energy, Industry 4.0, and sustainable technology, Jackson College is proud to announce the creation of the Center for Applied Technologies (CAT).

This state-of-the-art facility will represent a significant step forward in advancing Jackson College’s mission to serve the region’s workforce and economic development needs, and to continue the College’s efforts to expand its utilities programs. The CAT building will provide flexible, innovative spaces to support programs in the utilities, HVAC, energy efficiency, renewable energy, Industry 4.0  and more.

To start this new project, a groundbreaking ceremony is planned for Monday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m., to be held in the Jets Hangar. Plans call for a 15,000 square foot building to be built toward the southeast corner of campus, behind the Howser Child Development Center and near the Jets Hangar. The cost of the building is anticipated to be $6.8 million, with $5.8 million coming from the sale of bonds.

“The CAT building represents our commitment to creating innovative spaces that adapt to evolving industry needs,” said Dean Jamie Vandenburgh. “By integrating flexibility into the design, we’re ensuring our students receive hands-on, industry-relevant training that prepares them for success in high-demand careers.”

Jackson College offers an associate degree and a bachelor’s degree in energy systems. In addition, students may complete an Empower Lineworker Pre-Apprentice Certificate to become apprentice line workers, a program creating in partnership with Consumers Energy.

“The CAT building will support cutting-edge programs in Industry 4.0, Utility Technologies, and Professional Trades, providing students with the skills and expertise to meet the demands of our local employers and contribute to the economic vitality of our communities,” said President Daniel J. Phelan. “This is an exciting milestone as we continue to innovate and invest in the future of education, workforce, and economic development.”

Jackson College has communicated with statewide agencies, such as the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, the Michigan Municipal Electric Association, Michigan Workforce Training & Education Collaborative, and statewide utilities who offer their support for the project.

“ As an organization that is pivotal within the utility sector through safety, training, and system restoration, we recognize the growing need for skilled professionals capable of tackling the challenges of modern infrastructure, energy systems, and municipal services. Jackson College’s vision to enhance hands-on learning opportunities, mainly through creating a pole yard and climbing space, aligns perfectly with these workforce needs. The addition of indoor and outdoor training facilities, combined with the advanced lab space in the Center for Applied Technologies (CAT) building, will undoubtedly position the College as a key partner in workforce development for the whole utility industry,” wrote Katie Abraham, executive director of the MMEA.
