King Medal of Service Awards announced

Jackson Community College is pleased to announce the Martin Luther King, Jr. Medal of Service Awards for 2007, to be presented at the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Jan. 20. This year’s recipients include the Rev. Jay Cummings, and Charles and Patricia Anderson of Jackson.

Cummings has served as pastor at St. John Church of Christ, 801 S. Mechanic St., since the 1970s. Through his ministry and community service, Cummings has dedicated his life to giving to others. He has been active in the Partnership Park effort to help revitalize the neighborhood bounded by Morrell, Blackstone and Francis streets and Washington Avenue. He has helped to establish after school and summer programs for children.

Patricia Anderson is a retired Jackson school teacher, and husband Charles Anderson is a retired prison warden. Both are active in the community and are mentors of youth and involved with scholarship programs for young people. They serve on numerous boards and committees in Jackson, and Charles is a JCC trustee. He has recently begun working with a group on brainstorming ideas to help young men in the community.

The King Medal of Service Award recognizes individuals or groups of individuals in Jackson County for their community service. They are presented by JCC’s Office of Multicultural Relations.
