JCC to break ground on student housing
Jackson Community College will break ground on its new student housing unit at 5 p.m. Monday, June 12. Participating in the ground-breaking ceremony will be President Daniel J. Phelan and the JCC Board of Trustees members.
JCC will build a three-story apartment building to provide housing for students interested in living on campus, with 24 furnished apartments designed for four residents each. Campus housing will help to address the needs of local students who want to live on a college campus, and current and future students traveling a significant distance. Residents will enjoy a number of amenities, including individual bedrooms for each person, with two people sharing a full bathroom. There will be a convenience store for snacks and necessities, programs and activities for residents, and ample security measures for resident's safety.
"It really brings new life to campus," said Steve Bloomfield, assistant dean for student life. "Campus housing is one of the best indicators of student retention. Students tend to buy into their learning environment, and when you live in that environment, you are more apt to be more involved inside the classroom.
"Also, living on campus can be a fun experience, more of a traditional collegiate experience."
Estimated cost of construction is $5.65 million, and the project will be financed with revenue bonds paid by residents' rental money, with no funding from tax revenues. It will be constructed on the southeast corner of campus, near the Victor Cuiss Fieldhouse. Projected completion date will be May 2007.
