JCC enrollment figures set record
Jackson Community College’s Fall 2009 enrollment figures have increased by double digit percentages, with the College seeing the highest level of billing contact hours ever.
JCC has 1,098 more students this Fall semester compared to last, 7,788 compared to 6,690, 16 percent over a year ago and almost 37 percent from five years ago (2005 compared to 2009). Those students are enrolled in 79,758.58 billing contact hours (a measure of the time students spend in class), which is more than 10,000 greater than last Fall’s total (69,099), up 15 percent from a year ago and 48 percent from five years ago.
“I am both pleased and gratified to see that more community members are choosing JCC to start their college education, find a great career or get retrained for a new career,” said Dr. Daniel J. Phelan, JCC president. “The College has made many improvements in recent years to provide students the education they need today. We have also tried to reinforce the importance of a college education to workers in today’s changing marketplace. I believe more and more, people are realizing that importance and recognizing the quality and value of higher education opportunities available at JCC.”
Demographically, JCC is seeing a larger percentage of students enrolled full-time, who make up 49 percent of the student body and have increased 20 percent from last year (3,790 compared to 3,150 in ‘08). The number of students under the age of 22 enrolled in Fall 2009 is the highest JCC has seen in the last five years, 3,293, and represents 42 percent of total enrollment. There is also a 32 percent increase in the number of students over 30.
There is a 44 percent increase in the number of students of color enrolled this Fall compared to last year, 948 compared to 658 in ‘08. Of the total Fall enrollment, 12 percent is of ethnic minority, and that represents an 88 percent increase, nearly 450 students, from five years ago.
Enrollment is up at all JCC locations, Jackson, Internet, Hillsdale and Lenawee. Hillsdale is experiencing a 43 percent increase from last Fall, and Lenawee a 22 percent increase. JCC’s Jackson campus accounts for 61 percent of enrollment; Lenawee, 18 percent; Internet, 13 percent; and Hillsdale, 8 percent.
