Enrollment figures continue to climb in Lenawee County

Jackson Community College’s enrollment numbers in Lenawee County have increased by double digit percentages this Fall 2009 semester, according to the opening day count.

Enrollment at the JCC @ LISD TECH Center in Adrian is up 31 percent in billing contact hours this Fall 09 semester over last Fall, 13,762 compared to 10,458, and has increased more than 47 percent over the past five years. Headcount for Fall is up 36 percent since last year, 1,575 compared to 1,154, and is up 40 percent over the past five years.

“JCC @ LISD TECH is experiencing its largest enrollment to date,” said Michael Masters, assistant dean of the Lenawee center. Prior to this, the center’s largest enrollment was this past Winter semester, with enrollment figures topping over 1,350. “We are seeing a large increase in the number of No Worker Left Behind students.

“I also believe that numerous individuals have awakened to the reality of Michigan’s and the U.S. economy and that their future prospects for employment in high-demand, living wage jobs will require higher education coursework and training. Certainly there is increasing awareness of the value of obtaining skill sets, certificates, associate degrees and beyond to compete in a global economy.”

All JCC locations have added additional course section offerings to meet the current demand and needs of the communities it serves. JCC @ LISD TECH is offering 38 more class sections this Fall compared to last to accommodate the growing number of students.

Traditional-aged college students, ages 22 and under, comprise the largest percentage of JCC @ LISD TECH’s student body, 38.7 percent. Students ages 22-30 comprise 25 percent of the Lenawee student body, students ages 31-40 comprise 18.75 percent of the student body, and the remainder are 41 and above.

JCC’s enrollment at Hillsdale and its overall enrollment are up as well. Enrollment numbers at the Hillsdale LeTarte Center show a 42.5 percent increase in the number of billing contact hours students have enrolled in Fall 2009 semester over last Fall, 6,047.5 compared to 4,244, and a more than 70 percent increase over the past five years. Headcount is up 46 percent since last Fall, 742 compared to 507, and is up nearly 43 percent over the past five years.

Overall, JCC students enrolled in 79,490.07 billing contact hours as of the opening day, compared to 66,471.16 in Fall 08, a 19.6 percent increase. Student headcount is up 22.3 percent to 7,460 students, from 6,103 in Fall 08. Jackson campus figures will be released later this week in a 10th day enrollment report.

“I am extremely pleased that individuals in both communities are seeking out JCC as both a great place to start their post-secondary education as well as the answer to return to college to get retrained for another career,” said Dr. Daniel J. Phelan, JCC president. “This just reinforces our data and our Board of Trustees decision to invest in the facilities for the Lenawee and Hillsdale communities.”
