Jets sports teams sign players for coming year

Jackson Community College recently signed the following athletes to its 2009-2010 sports teams:

  • Kevin Casey, 2009 graduate of Concord High School, signed with men’s cross country. Casey, 6 feet 2 inches tall, was a part of the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Big 8 Conference Champion cross country team. Concord earned a regional championship in 2008 with Casey as part of the team. “Kevin’s main focus was track and field in high school; he’s a very good middle distance runner. He will have to adjust to the distance of running cross country. I see him improving throughout the season as he makes the adjustment,” said Brian Olsen, Jets cross country coach.

  • Stacey Furgala, 2009 graduate of Mason High School, signed with women’s basketball. The 5-foot-10-inch guard/forward was a four-year varsity starter and two-year captain for Mason. She was named Capital Area Athletic Conference-RED All-Conference four times. In 2008 and 2009 she was named Class A All-Area by the Lansing State Journal, and was named Class A Honorable Mention by the Associated Press. She led the Lansing area in stealing average, with 3.3 steals per game, and was second in the Lansing area in scoring average, with 18 points per game. “Stacey brings tremendous athleticism to our Lady Jets program,” said Andy Hoaglin, women’s basketball coach. “She has excellent basketball instincts and has demonstrated the ability to dominate a game, both offensively and defensively. At 5-foot-10, she’s extremely quick and demonstrates excellent agility. Her size, speed and skill level will provide opposing teams a difficult defensive match-up.”

  • Mara Wierzbicki and Jessica Avery, both 2009 graduates of Jackson High School, signed with the volleyball team. Wierzbicki is a 5-foot-9-inch setter and Avery a 5-foot-7-inch libero/defensive specialist. Both were scholar-athletes for the Vikings, honor roll students, All-Conference and All-Region athletes. “Mara brings great leadership skills to the team, and she has no problem as a freshman stepping in and taking charge. She will be a great asset to the Jets,” said Leigh Ann Swihart, volleyball coach. “Jessica has great fundamental skills and a great work ethic. I am excited to have both of these girls representing the Jets volleyball program.”

  • Taylor Ort, 2009 graduate of Brandywine High School in Niles, signed with the men’s baseball team. He is a 5-foot-10-inch third baseman and pitcher. “Taylor shows great athleticism and versatility in both positions. He will be a great asset to the JCC baseball team,” said Rick Smith, baseball coach.
