LeTarte Center plans workshops to help students prepare for college

Learn more about getting started at college, deciding a career and attaining financial aid when Jackson Community College Hillsdale LeTarte Center hosts upcoming workshops for prospective students.

On Friday, June 12, the LeTarte Center will host a free “Getting Started at College” workshop from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Center, 3120 W. Carleton Road, Hillsdale. It will be followed by a career assessment workshop, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., to help students find career opportunities that may best fit with their interests and abilities.

On Tuesday, June 16, students can get assistance completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, FAFSA, at a financial aid workshop from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the LeTarte Center. Filing the FAFSA is necessary for federal and state aid programs, and is an important first step for many scholarship opportunities. This will be a hands-on workshop with JCC personnel helping you through the process. Please bring your 2008 federal tax returns, and dependent students should bring their parent’s returns. Students will need to bring driver’s license, Social Security number, and proof of any untaxed income. It will also help if students (and a parent if dependent) apply for a PIN beforehand at www.pin.ed.gov. The PIN serves as an electronic signature and provides access to personal records.

For students in southern Hillsdale County, financial aid and course placement testing are planned Saturday, June 27 at Camden-Frontier High School. A financial aid workshop will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m., and course placement testing will be held from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Course placement is an assessment of one’s writing, reading and math skills to help place him or her in the appropriate courses.
