Women's softball team gains berth in tournament; players honored
Jackson Community College’s women’s softball team will be the No. 6 seed going into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) District E Tournament Thursday.
The Jets are scheduled to play the No. 2 seed, Muskegon Community College Jayhawks, at 10 .m. Thursday at Bailey Park in Battle Creek. Women’s softball has a conference record of 15 wins, 17 losses, and an overall record of 24-20.
Several players received All-Conference honors from the Michigan Community College Athletic Association, including:
Ashley Nieto was named First Team All-Conference. Nieto, of Addison, Mich., plays second base/pitcher and was named one of the NJCAA Division II Top Returning Players for 2009. For this season, she had a 3.5 earned run average as a pitcher, had a .350 batting average with 13 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 14 runs batted in, and had a .936 fielding percentage. She is a sophomore studying sonography at JCC.
Alissa Robison was named Second Team All-Conference. Robison, of Saline, Mich., plays third base/shortstop and for the season hit for a .311 batting average, with 10 doubles, one triple, six homeruns, 30 runs batted in, and had a fielding percentage of .825. She is a freshman majoring in elementary education at JCC.
Jessica Fether, outfielder from Waldron, Mich., was named Honorable Mention All-Conference. Fether was named one of the NJCAA Division II Top Returning Players for 2009. She hit .347 for the season, with four doubles, five triples, three home runs, 22 runs batted in, and had a fielding percentage of .826. She is a sophomore planning to study agricultural science.
Chelsea McGill, pitcher/infielder from Albion, Mich., was named Honorable Mention All-Conference. McGill had a 4.9 ERA for the season, had a batting average of .241 with one double and five runs batted in for the season, and had a .859 fielding percentage. She is a sonography major at JCC.
Amber Kuipers, pitcher from Holland, Mich., was named Honorable Mention All-Conference. Kuipers was named one of the NJCAA Division II Top Returning Players for 2009, and for the season had a 2.904 ERA and .889 fielding percentage. She is a sophomore pursuing general studies at JCC.
