Jackson Community Concert Band ready to 'Raise the Roof'

The Jackson Community Concert Band’s fall concert coming 3 p.m. Nov. 15 in Potter Center is going to Raise the Roof!

Concert-goers will enjoy a special performance from percussion soloist Bill Shaltis, who will perform Michael Daugherty’s Raise the Roof, written for timpani and symphonic band.  Raise the Roof was commissioned by and first performed by the University of Michigan Symphony Band in 2007. Shaltis is principal percussion with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, principal percussion with the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra and consortium faculty at the University of Evansville, located in Evansville, Indiana. His mother, Barbara, is a longtime member of the Jackson Community Concert Band.

The band will also perform “First Suite in E Flat” by Gustav Holst, “The Children’s March” by Percy Grainger, Overture to ‘La Forza Del Destino” by Giuseppi Verdi, and “Riverdance” by Carl Strommen.  

The Jackson Community Concert Band was established in 1987 and is comprised of JCC students and community members, under the direction of Associate Professor Ronald L. Douglass. Concert will be held in the Harold Sheffer Music Hall, Potter Center.  Tickets are $5 and may be purchased in advance by calling the Potter Center Box Office at 517.796.8600, or at the door the day of the concert. 

Bill Shaltis Biography

William Shaltis is principal percussion with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, principal percussion with the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra and consortium faculty at the University of Evansville, located in Evansville, Indiana. Prior to these appointments, Shaltis was a freelance musician in the Boston area, performing with organizations such as Boston Baroque, Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Lyric Opera, the Portland (ME) Symphony, and the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra.

Shaltis has also performed with the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra, Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Jackson (MI) Symphony Orchestra, Capital City (MI) Brass Band, New England Mehterhane (a traditional Turkish Janissary ensemble), at the Aspen Music Festival for two seasons, and at two Percussive Arts Society International Conventions. He has worked with notable conductors, such as Neeme Jaarvi, Leonard Slatkin, Gunther Schuller, James Conlon, and David Zinman, and esteemed performers, including Yo-Yo Ma and Evelyn Glennie.

A sought-after educator and clinician, Shaltis has adjudicated marching and concert events and has given masterclasses throughout the Midwest and New England areas. Shaltis served on the faculty of the Interlochen Arts Camp, developed an award-winning after school Drum Club with the Boys and Girls Club of Evansville, and helped found the University of Evansville Drumline in 2007. Shaltis is also the percussion coordinator for Henderson County High School in Henderson KY, directing the percussion ensembles and marching percussion activities.

Shaltis received a Bachelor of Music in music education from Michigan State University and a Master of Music in percussion performance from the Boston Conservatory. His teachers have included Salvatore Rabbio, John Grimes, Pat Hollenbeck, Nancy Zeltsman, David Herbert, Keith Aleo, Jonathan Haas, Ben Herman, Alison Shaw and David Gross.
