Mission:
Assistive Technology provided by Jackson Community College strives to facilitate all students with equitable access to educational technology regardless of any challenges of limitation.
- Assistive Technology is supported by the Student Computer Consultants in conjunction with the Center for Student Success.
- We have equipment and software that can help students who need assistance using computers in the labs and classrooms to complete course work.

Assistance Options
Descriptions of all available products for students seeking assistance for their college experience is listed below.
Assistive Listening Device
This is a wireless microphone and headset unit, good for those with hearing impairments. Allows an instructor or speaker to use a wireless handheld or lapel microphone and have their speech transmitted to 1 of 6 headphone receivers in the audience. (Headphones are available with Assistive Listening Device)
Big Print Keyboard
Large print keyboards are designed with printed bold letters that can help visually impaired users see and recognize the keys easier.
Braille Keyboard
A standard computer keyboard and alter it to become a Braille keyboard which have Braille embodiments along with the corresponding latter in large print.
Dragon Naturally Speaking
A voice recognition program that allows a user to speak into a microphone and have their words transcribed onto an electronic document instead of typing it.
Ergonomic Keyboard
A curved keyboard that is designed to have a more natural feel than a regular keyboard.
Gel Wrist Keyboard/Mouse Pad
Pads that give support to users wrists when typing on the keyboard or using the mouse. Providing a more comforting position and reducing the danger of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Headphone Amplifier
A device for amplifying sounds and can be easily connected to a computer using a simple adapter. A user can use stereo headphones to increase the volume from the computer by a factor of 5 to 10 times higher. (Headphones are available with Headphone Amplifier)
Kurzweil 3000
A type-to-voice program in which the software reads back to the user aloud what is typed into it.
Large Monitor
A monitor with a much larger screen for visually impaired users to have an easier view.
Magic Touch Screen
A screen cover device that is used on a computer monitor that allows for a user to use a screen pen to select areas on the computer instead of using the mouse. This is considered helpful for both visually and physically impaired users.
Max-View Magnifier
These are desktop magnifiers that are placed over the monitor screen. They magnify the display with only minor distortion and considered to be useful for visually impaired users.
Mouse & Caret Buddy
A program that enlarges the mouse cursor to assist the user in being more accurate with the mouse.
Scan & Read Pro 5.1
A program that allows a user to scan a document with text onto the computer and have a voice program vocalize the material, reading the content back to the user through speakers or a headphones.
TeleSensory Projector
A device connected in series with a monitor or television. It can take items such as documents and project them onto the monitor using simple visual enlargement controls.
Track Ball Mouse
A type of mouse that is stationary. Instead of moving a mouse around a pad in various hand & arm movements, which can be difficult for physically impaired people, a track ball has a large rolling ball on the top of the device which allows the user to manipulate the computer curser with less strain.
Windows Ease of Access Options
There is a narrator that narrates anything that you click on or run your mouse over. A magnifier that follows the mouse and magnifies anything that the mouse runs over. And an on-screen keyboard which allows users to type by using the mouse to click on a letter.
